Its a great start!<br /><br />Your obvoiusly going to need the proper capacity and weight of oil for your oil change.<br />You can get capacities and specs at <a href="http://www.wazcoautomotive.com/">http://www.wazcoautomotive.com/</a>. Your going to need an oil filter too!<br /><br />I start on the top under the hood. You can work yourself a system and get into a routine pretty easy. If you want actual maintenance schedules click above! wazcoautomotive.com. Drive vehicle up on ramps- this is the safest, easiest way to change oil! Information/Pricing/To Order ramps, click above-wazco.<br /><br />Check all fluid levels for level and color/smell. If it looks or smells like theres something goofy, there probably is! Also check oil level before you change, (you should be checking this regularly/gas stops anyway.) it will give you an idea if your vehicle is using oil and then we can do a little self dianostic and see if we can nail the problem down. Remove oil cap.<br /><br />Drain pan. I like the ones that look like a frying pan, have a cork for the top and a cap for the spout, easy cleanup/maintain. If you have a transverse engine type car, make sure your pulling the drain plug on the crankcase, not the transmission! Drain the oil. I'd even get out from under the thing even and drink a beer or something. (I do not recommend this but do whatever you want) Once the oil is drained, 5 minutes or so, replace drain plug and do not tighten this down like your Hercules. Just put enough snug on it to keep it in! The gasket, if in place will do the rest, if not in place or damaged when you pulled the plug, make sure you replace it!<br /><br />Keep drain pan handy, because it's time for the oil filter. This can get messy depending on what kind of car you have so don't take it personally if it splatters all over the place- Its not you! In general keep the pan under the filter and you'll catch the mess. Even better reason to like the big frying pan type oil drain pan. This should be hand tight if not a little tighter due to heat! If you have problems removing it, they make a few different style oil filter wrenches/straps/sockets.<br />Put a little oil on your finger and run it around the gasket on the new filter. Make sure the gasket to the old filter came off or you'll get really good and putting oil filters on and off! Because your going to do it again when the oil leaks out of the double gasket when you turn the key. DO NOT turn the key yet! Put new filter on and "hand tighten". I got some pretty strong hands so they are on there pretty good i've noticed on the next one! If you can get both hands on it, just for a little extra torque, then great, but not too tight! If you haven't already got out the hand towels, well you know the rest. Pull your tools, pan, towels etc and back to the top. (Some vehicles still have a few grease fittings here and there so if you want, grab a gun and go back for more under the car action).<br /><br />Get out the oil and start to add. If you know your vehicles capacity then rock and roll! If its 4.7 qts, put 4 in and turn the key. Let it run for a minute to fill the oil filter and then give it a couple minutes to settle/mark right on the dipstick. I just add from there until I get it to the appropriate level. Actually I'm pretty anal and will put it right to the full mark. This also gives me a better idea if its using any in between. I know I started at the top!<br /><br />I make myself oil change reminders on the computer. You can get clear cling and make some pretty professional stickers for pretty cheap. And printed. And enough to last you a life time of oil changes. No ball point pen that fades off from the sun and you end up blowing up your car cuz you can't remember when you changed oil last.<br /><br />If your vehicle has an oil life system like my GM's. You'll want to reset this. How often should an oil change happen?<br /><br />3,000 miles is whats etched in <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_0" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">every ones</span> mind. 40 Years ago, a person would worry if their car got closer and closer to 100,000 miles. 100,000 miles is now most vehicles first big scheduled maintenance. 100,000 mile iridium spark plugs, 105,000 mile timing belts, etc.<br /><br />In my opinion, everything got better. Obviously, with cars reaching 300, 400, 500 thousand miles, vehicles are just plain built better. Oil, had to have gotten better too don't ya think?<br />Different <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_1" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">refinery's</span>, different detergents etc. Oils ability to keep your engine cool, lubricated, and clean got better! There was even record of a Chevy truck that crossed the 1,000,000 mile mark.<br />The man used an oil system cleaner regularly-(more on these later).<br /><br />So how often? I spent many years in dealers service lanes and there is even one manufacturer that puts right in the owners manual, 7,500 miles and 15,000 for the first filter change. I personally don't believe is this one at all, but its out there.<br /><br />Some manufacturers have a maintenance reminder that comes on at a set mileage. GM has an oil life monitor that actually measures combustion events, and other factors that will trigger a "Change Oil Soon" light or message. I own 2 models with this feature, a 2002 Impala LS, and a 2003 Silverado 1500 4X4. I've become a believer in this system from just personal experience with both vehicles.<br /><br />The Silverado I bought new tripped the light the first time (I changed oil @ 1,000 miles and reset the system) at about 2900 miles. Second time about 5400 miles (2,500 miles after first), and slowly increased mileage until I switched it over to full synthetic at about 10,000 miles.<br />GM puts Mobil 1 in the vettes, I put it in my Silverado! I'm coming up on my first spark plug change @ 100,000 miles and with the synthetic oil I get between 7 and 8 thousand miles between oil changes.<br /><br />The Impala I bought used with about 60,000 miles. I'm sure the dealer I purchased it from serviced because the oil/filter/air filter/ etc were all new. (You ususally don't spend money on these items if your trading it in.) I had in my mind to switch it over to Mobil 1 also but I figured I see where the "change oil soon" light came on. About 5,500 miles later, and "ding" the light came on. After a couple of oil changes with my synthetic of choice and now this car gets 7 to 8 thousand miles between oil changes. I am comfortable with these systems of mine.<br /><br />My point is, when it comes to oil changes and maintenance, you have to decide what your "comfortable" with. I tell people all day long, keep it 3 to 5 thousand miles regularly and you won't have any problems. If you buy a car new, do what it says in the owners manual. Follow the maintenance schedule. Fuel systems like everything else need to stay clean to operate efficiently. A fuel injection service, does just that. Most systems are 3 step or 3 part. 1 for the Fuel tank, added to remove moisture, foreign oils, deposits, etc from the fuel system up to the rail. 2nd one for the rail. Usually hooked up to a pressurized machine that forces the cleaner through the rail at a rate higher then normal fuel pressure to remove cabon and buildup from the rail, and the injectors. 3rd usually is a crankcase additive to remove any deposits from your oil system that the filter can't trap. This is the one service that I can offer at my shop that you will actually feel! See if fuel is restricted you'll use more getting it to where its got to go. You loosen up these restrictions and you will feel the difference and see the difference when the gas gauge doesn't go down as fast! Try it! Tell me you don't feel the difference!!!
